You and I have long known the horrors the Sorcerers Guild inflicts to hide the existence of magic outside their control. I fear even we did not know the extent of the lies that surround us.

Everything the Guilds teach us is wrong. There are things down here that can only be explained by sorcerer-wielded magic.

We found an abandoned city in the darkness below the mountains. Not stone hovels or crude dwellings. Proper houses and streets. The stone of the buildings grows right up from the ground. The magic in the city’s making is undeniable, but I’ve found no other clues as to who once called this place home.

The city is empty, though I can’t tell why. Everything made of wood has started to decay. I have found no proof as to whether the doors of the stone homes were kicked in or simply fell victim to time.

Of the homes we’ve explored, we’ve only found the bones of one poor soul, when there should be thousands if the city had been emptied by an illness. We’ve found evidence of a stable, but no trace of the horses that would have lived there so long ago.

The city seems haunted, and every instinct tells me we should run. This kind of darkness is not meant for men to survive. Perhaps it was different when this place was filled with living people, but with the darkness pressing in around the single light we carry, I cannot convince myself that specters do not lurk just out of sight.

If Dudia made ghosts of all the people who once dwelled here, I am surrounded by an army of the dead, a horde that possess magic I could never hope to defeat.

But I’m still glad I’ve found this place, even if the people who built it fled from some unspeakable evil. Even if Dudia sends all their spirits to haunt me.

Those who dwelled in this darkness must have found a path that led down here. And if their bones aren’t here, they must have found a way out.

There is another passage into this place. This city is proof that one must exist. We only have to find it.

As much hope as this brings me, questions still swirl through my mind. What horror could have driven so many to give up the light and build their homes this far underground? How much does the Sorcerers Guild know of these people? How far would they go to destroy the magic that created this home in the heart of the mountains?

I’m not sure I want to know the answers.

Do not lose faith in me.

I will find a way out,

Niko
